System Requirements
Unyte™ works with Windows 2000 or XP. You must have Skype (version 1.4 or higher) and the Unyte
plug-in installed on your system in order to host Unyte™ sharing sessions.
Unyte™ has the same minimum and recommended system requirements as Skype.
(See "How
to Use Skype" for system requirements.)
Security
Unyte™ uses 128 bit SSL encryption.
It also blocks any unauthorized attempts to connect to the shared applications.
Look for the security icon [
] on the Application Sharing control
page.
You should only use Unyte with contacts that you trust!
What happens in a Unyte™ session?
You select the applications you want to share and invite up to four viewers
to your Unyte™ session. You can even choose to share your whole desktop.
You also decide if you want your viewers to have remote control over the
applications you share.
The viewers you invite click a link to join your sharing session and view your shared applications
in their browser.
What can I share?
You can share documents, presentations, applications, slide shows, your
Web browser, and even your whole desktop! When you start Unyte™, an Applications
List shows the available selections on your system.
You can choose Remote Control to enable your viewers to actually use
the applications you share. You can also adjust the image quality to optimize
performance.
Starting Unyte™
To start Unyte™:
- Log into Skype.
- Click the Unyte™ icon on your desktop or select Programs
> Unyte > WebDialogs Unyte™ from the Windows Start button.
- In the message box alerting you that another program wants to use
Skype, select "Allow this program to use Skype."
When Unyte™ is running, the Unyte™ icon [
] appears in color on the Windows taskbar at
the bottom right of your screen (Note, that if you use Windows 2000 the icon will look slightly different [
] ).
Starting a sharing session is easy! Just right-click the icon in the
Windows taskbar and follow these three steps:
After your sharing session starts, you can select additional contacts
and applications.
Notes:
- If you selected the download option "Start Unyte™ when I start
Windows," you do not have to start the program. The Unyte™ icon
appears in the Windows taskbar at the bottom of your screen.
- If the Unyte™ icon is grey, you are not connected to Skype. Log in
to Skype before you can start a Unyte™ session.
- If you want to change your settings to start Unyte™ when you start
Windows, right-click the Unyte icon, select Options, and select "Start
Unyte™ when I start Windows."
Inviting Skype Contacts
Unyte™ provides several ways for you to invite your Skype Contacts to a sharing session.
To invite:
Note: You can also invite non-Skype contacts to your sharing session.
To invite an Online Skype Contact:
- Right-click the Unyte™ icon.
- Select Share With > Online Skype Contacts and select the Contact's name from the menu.
(Only Contacts who are online and have given you authorization to see
when they are online appear in this list.)

A pop-up message alerts your Contact that you want to collaborate. A
Skype Chat message provides a URL that the Contact can click to link
to your Unyte™ sharing session.
To invite multiple Skype Contacts:
- Double-click the Unyte™ icon or right-click the icon and select Share With > Multiple Skype Contacts.
- Select a Contact to share with from the list of All Contacts and click the Add button.
To select multiple Contacts, shift-click or alt-click the names in the list.
To remove Contacts, select the names in the Share With list and click the Remove button.
You can also double-click a name to move a Contact between lists.
- When finished, click the OK button.
Unyte™ sends your Contacts a Skype Chat message stating that you wish
to collaborate with them and providing the URL.
To invite Offline Skype Contacts:
- Double-click the Unyte™ icon or right-click the icon and select Share With > Multiple Skype Contacts.
- Select one or more Contacts to share with from the All Contacts list and click the Add button.
An icon next to each name indicates whether the Contact is online or offline.
- Click OK.
When the Contact comes back online, he or she receives a Skype Chat message stating that you wish to collaborate and providing the URL.
To invite Contacts from Skype Chat:
- Click the Share icon in the Chat window during your Chat session.

The Chat message displays a URL that your Contacts can click to join your Unyte™ sharing session.
Selecting applications to share
After you select Skype Contacts to share with, the Application Sharing control
page opens. The Applications List shows the applications open on
your desktop.

To share:

To deselect an application, click in the checkbox again.
Note: You can set your share quality and enable
remote control before you start sharing or during the sharing session.
Starting a sharing session
When you click Share Selected or Share All on the Application Sharing
page, the sharing session starts and viewers can join. When you are sharing an application,
a Share icon appears in the Windows title bar at the top right of
the application:

After your sharing session starts, you can select
additional contacts to share with. You can also change
the share quality setting and enable remote control.
Setting share quality
You can adjust the image quality to optimize the performance balance
between speed and resolution. The default setting is Medium Quality, which
performs well on most systems.

To change the share quality before starting a sharing session:
- On the Application Sharing page, move the slider to choose a setting.
To change the share quality during a sharing session:
- Right-click the Unyte™ icon in the Windows taskbar.
- Select Sharing Control from the menu.
- On the Application Sharing page, move the slider to choose a setting.
Enabling remote control
When you enable remote control, all viewers attending your Unyte™ sharing
session can use the shared application, as if the application were open
on their own desktop.
To enable remote control before starting a sharing session:
- On the Application Sharing page, select Enable Remote Control.

To enable remote control during a sharing session:
- Right-click the Unyte™ icon in the Windows taskbar.
- Select Sharing Control from the menu.
- On the Application Sharing page, select Enable Remote Control.
Sharing with non-Skype contacts
You can also invite non-Skype users by sending them the link to your
session.
To invite non-Skype users by passing a link:
- Right-click the Unyte™ icon in the Windows taskbar and select Share With > Non-Skype Users.
- If you have not yet started your sharing session, select applications and start sharing.
- In the dialog box containing the join link, click Copy to copy the link to your clipboard.
- Paste the link into an e-mail message, text editor, or any type of
file you can pass to your invitees.
- Send the link to your invitees with instructions to open in a browser.
To invite non-Skype users by providing a URL and access information:
- Right-click the Unyte™ icon in the Windows taskbar.
- From the menu, select Share With > Non-Skype Users.
- If you have not yet started your sharing session, select applications and start sharing.
A dialog box provides a URL, Session ID, and Key for entering your
sharing session.
- Pass the URL, Session ID, and Key to your invitees with instructions
to browse to the URL and enter the access information.
Tips for Sharing
Unyte™ keeps you informed of the status of your sharing session and your
viewers. When a new viewer joins your session, the following message appears briefly
at the bottom of your screen:

At any time, you can check your status by pausing your mouse over the
Unyte™ icon in the Windows task bar. A yellow status message indicates
whether you are Sharing or Not Sharing. If you are sharing, the message
informs you how many viewers are connected. For example:
Remember that the Share icon appears in the Windows title bar at the top right of any application you are sharing.

When you finish sharing, be sure to stop your Unyte™ session.
Stopping a Unyte™ session
You can stop your sharing session at any time.
Note: When you end a Skype call, you will be asked if you want to stop your sharing session. You may continue sharing after your call, but remember to stop your Unyte™ session when you finish. You should not leave applications shared on your desktop.
To end the sharing session:
- Right-click the Unyte™ icon in the Windows taskbar.
- Select Stop Sharing.

The sharing session ends on your system and for all viewers.
Closing Unyte
To close Unyte:
- Right-click the Unyte™ icon in the Windows taskbar.
- Select Exit from the menu.
- Click Yes to indicate that you want to close Unyte.
If a sharing session was in progress, the session ends on your system
and for all viewers. The Unyte™ icon disappears from your Windows taskbar.
System Requirements
Unyte™ works in all browsers with Java Virtual Machine (JVM), including
Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari. Internet Explorer users need version
5.5 or later.
You do not need to install Unyte™ to view shared applications. If JVM
is not present on your system, you will be prompted to download an Activex
component (for Internet Explorer) or JVM (for other browsers).

Security
Unyte™ is using 128 bit SSL encryption for transmitting any visual information
from your host as well as any input data from the participant side.
What happens in a Unyte™ session?
A Skype user invites you to a Unyte™ sharing session by sending you a
link. When you click the link, you view your host's shared applications
in your browser. If your host has enabled remote control,
you can use the application as if it were open on your own desktop.
Joining a Unyte™ session (Skype users)
Your host sends you a link to the sharing session in a Skype Chat message.
For example:

Simply click the link in the Chat message to join the session.
A message displays "Please wait while connecting to the shared desktop."
You may be prompted to download a viewing component.
Joining a Unyte™ session (Non-Skype users)
If you are not a Skype user, your host can pass you a link in one of
two ways.
If your host gives you a hyperlink directly to the sharing session:
- Enter the link in your browser's address bar.
For example:
If your host gives you a URL with a Session ID and Key:
- Browse to the URL.
- Enter the Session ID and Key.
For example:

- Click Join.
A message displays "Please wait while connecting to the shared desktop."
You may be prompted to download a viewing component.
Adjusting share quality
Viewers can change the share quality settings by clicking the following
icons at the top left of the page:

Zooms out. Image is scaled to fit your screen. Some
color reduction may occur. |
Using remote control
If your host has enabled Remote Control, you can use the application
your host is sharing, as if the application were open on your own desktop.
Exiting a Unyte™ session
If you want to leave before the sharing session finishes, click the Exit
button:
